Who Was Dr. Lovvorn?
Dr. James Lewis Lovvorn (1862–1926) was an important person in Bowdon. He studied at several colleges, including Bowdon College. He also attended the Medical College of Georgia and the University of Georgia Medical Department. He became a doctor in 1886.
Building a Dream Home
In 1888, Dr. Lovvorn married Carrie M. Johnson. They bought their land that same year. Together, they planned their new home. They wanted it to have gas lights and a fireplace in every room. The famous architect George F. Barber designed the house. Dr. Lovvorn even had his medical office on the first floor.
Unique Architectural Style
The Dr. James L. Lovvorn House is a great example of the Queen Anne architectural style. This style was popular in the late 1800s. It often features towers, turrets, and decorative woodwork. Inside the Lovvorn House, you can see beautiful East Lake-style woodwork. This type of woodwork is very detailed and decorative.
A Historic Landmark
The Dr. James L. Lovvorn House was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1988. This means it is recognized as an important historic site in the United States. It helps preserve the history and architecture of the past. The house was still privately owned and lived in as of 2010.
