The Dr. Oscar Owre House is a special old house located in Minneapolis, Minnesota. It sits near Lake of the Isles. This historic home was built in 1912. It was designed by famous local architects named Purcell, Feick & Elmslie. The house is a great example of the unique Prairie School style of architecture.

Meet Dr. Oscar Owre

Dr. Oscar Owre was a professor. He taught at the University of Minnesota School of Dentistry. This house was built as his family home. He lived there with his wife, Katherine.

What Makes This House Special?

The Dr. Oscar Owre House looks mostly like a cube. But it has porches that extend outwards. The front porch is enclosed with glass. This glassed-in porch offers a great view of the nearby lake.

The house shares some cool design ideas with another home. That home is the William Gray Purcell House. Both houses have low roofs that hang over the walls. They also feature bands of windows. Plus, their main entrances are on the side, not the front.

A House That Cost Less!

Dr. Owre and his wife, Katherine, were worried about the cost. They feared the house would go over budget. William Purcell, one of the architects, later wrote about their concerns. He said Dr. Owre was "scared to death" about extra costs. Friends had told them that building projects often cost more than planned.

But guess what? This house was different! It actually came in under budget. The final cost was $17,275. That was a happy surprise for the Owres. The Dr. Oscar Owre House was added to the National Register of Historic Places on March 8, 1984. This means it is a very important historic building.
