Dr. Seuss on the Loose is an American animated musical television special. It first aired on CBS on October 15, 1973. The special is hosted by The Cat in the Hat. He introduces three animated stories by Dr. Seuss. These stories are The Sneetches, The Zax, and Green Eggs and Ham. Allan Sherman provided the voice for The Cat in the Hat. This was his last project before he passed away about a month after the show aired.

This collection of stories was also released as Green Eggs and Ham and Other Stories. This happened for a sing-a-long video and a Blu-ray edition in 2012.

What Happens in the Stories

The Sneetches

The first story is about yellow, bird-like creatures called Sneetches. Some Sneetches have a green star on their bellies. Others do not. At first, the Sneetches with stars think they are better. They treat the plain-bellied Sneetches badly.

Then, a clever person named Sylvester McMonkey McBean arrives. He calls himself the Fix-It-Up Chappie. He offers to put stars on the plain-bellied Sneetches using his Star-On machine. It costs three dollars. Everyone wants a star!

This makes the original star-bellied Sneetches upset. They don't feel special anymore. So, McBean offers them his Star-Off machine for ten dollars. They pay to have their stars removed. But McBean lets the new star-bellied Sneetches use this machine too.

Soon, Sneetches are running back and forth. They go from one machine to the other. They spend all their money. They can't tell who is who anymore. McBean leaves as a rich man. He is amused by their foolishness. Even though he said "you can't teach a Sneetch," they learn a big lesson. They realize that having a star or not doesn't make anyone better. They all become friends.

The Zax

In "The Zax," two creatures, a North-going Zax and a South-going Zax, meet. They are on the Prairie of Prax. They stand face to face. Each Zax asks the other to move. But neither one will budge. They say it goes against how they were raised. They refuse to move in any direction except their own.

They stand there for so long. The world keeps changing around them. A highway overpass is built right over them! The story ends with the two Zax still standing there. They are "unbudged" in their tracks.

Green Eggs and Ham

"Green Eggs and Ham" is about Sam-I-Am. He really wants Guy-Am-I to try green eggs and ham. But Guy keeps saying, "I do not like green eggs and ham. I do not like them, Sam-I-Am."

Sam follows Guy everywhere. He asks him to try the food in many places. These include a house, a box, a car, and a tree. He also asks him to try them on a train, in the dark, in the rain, and on a boat. Sam also suggests eating them with different animals. These are a mouse, a fox, and a goat.

Finally, Guy gives in. He tries the green eggs and ham. To his surprise, he loves them! He happily says he would eat them anywhere and with anyone. The story ends with him saying, "I do so like green eggs and ham. Thank you. Thank you, Sam-I-Am."
