Dragana Kršenković Brković studied political science and drama. In 1981, a TV station in Belgrade showed her play called Vrele kapi. She wrote this play when she was trying to get into drama school.
Her Life and Work
When wars started in the Balkans, Dragana moved from Belgrade, Serbia, to Podgorica, Montenegro. There, she and her husband, Tomislav Brković, started a puppet theater called The Blue Lagoon. You can find out more about this theater in a book called Puppet Theatre Blue Lagoon, published in 2019.
Dragana has traveled to many places for her writing. She has been part of special writing programs in the United States, Hungary, and Austria. For example, she was in New York City in 2014 and in Austria in 2011.
In 2005 and 2006, Dragana was a Hubert Humphrey fellow. This is a special program that helps people from other countries study and gain experience in the United States. She spent a year in California and Washington D.C. In 2008, she also received a grant from the Austrian Government to do research at the University of Graz in Austria.
She has also taken part in many international events. These include a forum for peace in Greece, an illustration event in Bratislava in 2011, and the Bologna Book Fair in 2011. She also attended the Leipzig Book Fair in 2023.
Her Creative Works
Dragana's plays are performed in many countries in the Balkan region. Four of her plays are even required reading for elementary school students in Montenegro and Macedonia. Her book The Genie of Lake Manito was chosen for the White Ravens Awards in 2011. This award recognizes excellent children's and youth literature from around the world.
She has been nominated ten times for the Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award (ALMA), which is a very important award for children's literature. Two movies have been made based on her fairy tales: Hozentarus (in 2018) and The Magic Key (in 2020). These movies were filmed by the Public Broadcasting Services of Montenegro.
Her stories have appeared in many international magazines. Some of these include October Hill Magazine, The Bosphorus Review of Books, and Buchkultur.
