Dreka, Texas facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Dreka is a very small community located in the southeastern part of Shelby County, Texas, in the United States. It's a place that isn't officially a town or city, but it has a history of people living and working there. You can find Dreka southeast of a larger town called Center, right along Farm to Market Road 2427.

History of Dreka

Dreka was first settled around the year 1890. It started as a small gathering of homes and people.

In 1894, a post office was opened in Dreka, which was a big deal for the community. It meant people could send and receive mail right there. A person named Martin Shofner was the postmaster, meaning he was in charge of the post office. However, the post office didn't stay open for very long, closing its doors in 1907.

By 1933, about 25 people were estimated to be living in Dreka, and there was at least one business operating. The community grew a bit more by 1946. At that time, Dreka had a church, a general store, and even a cotton gin. A cotton gin is a machine that helps separate cotton fibers from their seeds, which was important for farming communities in Texas.

However, over the years, the population and businesses in Dreka began to decline. By 1988, only the church remained as a community gathering place. Even though many of its original buildings were gone, Dreka was still recognized as a community in 1990.
