Drew Marshall's Radio Career
After returning to Canada in 2003, Drew Marshall suggested a new kind of radio show. It would be a talk show about spiritual topics. The radio station CJYE (AM) liked his idea. On his show, he interviewed many interesting people. This included Canada's former Prime Minister, Stephen Harper.
The "Go to Church" Experiment
In June 2007, Drew Marshall did something unique. He put an ad in the Toronto Star newspaper. He offered $500 to someone who would go to church with him. He wanted to see how people who don't usually go to church would feel about it. This idea came from two books. One was Jim and Casper Go to Church. The other was Hemant Mehta's book, I Sold My Soul on eBay.
Two university students were chosen for this experiment. Their names were "Sabrina the Pagan" and "Taylor the Agnostic." They visited five different churches in Southern Ontario. These included churches in Orangeville and Toronto. While visiting, Sabrina and Taylor wrote about their experiences. They shared their thoughts on Marshall's blog, called Hoof Hearted.
Preacher Idol Contest
In January 2008, Drew Marshall started a contest called Preacher Idol. It was the first contest of its kind in the world. He invited people to share their preaching skills. People sent in 10-minute videos of themselves. They were preaching to people who didn't usually go to church. These videos were put on YouTube and GodTube. Audiences could watch and vote for their favorites.
The top three winners of Preacher Idol received prizes. They got $2,000 for theological training and books. They also got a chance to preach at a big church in Southern Ontario.
So You Think God Wants You To Sing
In September 2009, Marshall launched another contest. It was called So You Think God Wants You To Sing (SYTGWYTS). This contest focused on singing.
Drew's Search for Answers
In July 2010, Drew Marshall shared something personal. He said he was publicly exploring his own beliefs. He had a period of deep questioning about his faith. He talked about this during an interview with Christian writer Ravi Zacharias.
Marshall decided to keep hosting his spiritual talk show. He wanted to create a space for open discussions. He wanted people to feel comfortable talking about their own questions and beliefs. He even made a special webpage called DROOGLE. This page was for "Drew's search for God." It was a place for honest talks about faith and the existence of God.
It was very unusual for a Christian radio host to share such personal questions. Most hosts might step down or lose their job. But Drew Marshall continued his public search. He said he would keep searching until December 18, 2010. He hoped to find clear answers by Christmas.
Other Appearances
Drew Marshall also appeared in other media. He was a cast member in a documentary called Journey To Christmas. This film was shot in Israel and released in 2011. He was also featured in another documentary called The Devil We Know in 2011.
He was a guest on several TV and radio shows. These included Test The Nation on CBC and 100 Huntley Street. He also appeared at The Global ComedyFest in Vancouver. He was a guest panelist at the Canadian Association of Broadcaster's conference. There, he discussed how talk radio affects society. He also hosted the Kingfest outdoor music festival.
