Drew Marshall's Radio Career
Drew Marshall started his radio career in Canada in 2003. He suggested a new kind of talk show to CJYE (AM) radio station. This show would focus on spiritual topics. He even interviewed important people like Prime Minister Stephen Harper.
The Church Experiment
In June 2007, Marshall placed an advertisement in the Toronto Star newspaper. He offered $500 to someone who would go to church with him. He wanted to learn how people who don't usually go to church see it. This idea came from books like Jim and Casper Go to Church.
Two university students, "Sabrina the Pagan" and "Taylor the Agnostic," were chosen. They visited five different churches in Southern Ontario. These included Orangeville Baptist and Toronto Airport Christian Fellowship. Both students wrote about their experiences on Marshall's blog, called Hoof Hearted.
Preacher Idol Contest
In January 2008, Marshall hosted a unique contest called Preacher Idol. He invited people to share their preaching skills. People sent in 10-minute videos of themselves speaking to non-churchgoers. These videos were put on YouTube and GodTube for everyone to watch and vote on.
The top three finalists received $2,000 for training and books. They also got the chance to preach at a major church in Southern Ontario.
So You Think God Wants You To Sing
In September 2009, Marshall launched another contest. It was called So You Think God Wants You To Sing (SYTGWYTS). This contest focused on singing talent.
A Public Search for Answers
In July 2010, Marshall shared something very personal. He told the public that he was unsure if God existed. He revealed this during an interview with Christian writer Ravi Zacharias. Marshall decided to continue his spiritual talk show. He hoped to create open discussions about doubt and faith.
He created a webpage called DROOGLE, which stood for 'Drew's search for God'. This page was a place for honest talks about faith and God's existence. It was unusual for a Christian radio host to share such doubts and keep his job. Marshall continued his public search until December 18, 2010. He said he hoped for "an encounter with God" by Christmas.
Other Appearances
Drew Marshall also appeared in various other media. He was a cast member in "Journey To Christmas," a documentary filmed in Israel. This film was released in 2011. He was also featured in "The Devil We Know," another documentary from 2011.
He was a guest on "Test The Nation" on CBC in January 2010. Marshall also appeared at The Global ComedyFest in Vancouver in September 2010. He was a guest on "100 Huntley Street" in January 2007. Marshall also spoke at the Canadian Association of Broadcaster's Annual Conference. He was a Master of Ceremonies for the Kingfest outdoor music festival.
