Distribution of D. fulva in Australia

Drosera fulva is a special type of carnivorous plant. This means it eats insects! It belongs to the Drosera genus, also known as sundews.

This plant only grows in the Northern Territory of Australia. Its leaves grow in a tight circle close to the ground, like a rosette. The leaves are long and narrow, about 2 to 3 millimeters wide. At the end of these leaves are small, round, red parts. These are the sticky traps that catch insects. Drosera fulva also grows tall flower stalks, about 25 to 45 centimeters long. These stalks have many white or sometimes pink flowers. They bloom from February to May.

Where Drosera fulva Lives

Drosera fulva likes to live in wet, sandy places. You can find it in areas that get wet for a short time, like after rain. It also grows where water slowly seeps out of the ground.

This plant is mostly found around the city of Darwin. It grows from Koolpinyah to Noonamah. It has also been found in Port Essington. A plant expert named Allen Lowrie thought it might also grow on the Cobourg Peninsula.

How Drosera fulva Was Discovered

The first time Drosera fulva was collected was between 1838 and 1840. A botanist named John W. Armstrong found it in Port Essington. He was collecting plants for the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew in England.

Later, in 1848, a scientist named Jules Émile Planchon officially described this new plant. He gave it the name Drosera fulva. For a long time, people thought it was the same as another plant, D. petiolaris. But Allen Lowrie later showed that D. fulva is its own unique species.

Is Drosera fulva Safe?

In 1996, Allen Lowrie checked on Drosera fulva. He said it was common and not in danger of disappearing. This plant is related to two other sundews: D. brevicornis and D. dilatato-petiolaris. However, Drosera fulva is different because of how tall its flower stalks are. It also has different kinds of leaves and fruit.
