Drummer Hoff is a super cool children's book created by Barbara and Ed Emberley. Ed Emberley even won a special award called the Caldecott Medal in 1968 for his amazing pictures in the book! The story is a fun, repeating tale about seven soldiers who work together to build a big cannon called "Sultan." Guess who fires it off? Drummer Hoff! When the cannon goes off, the book explodes with bright, colorful pictures. The very last picture shows the cannon later, surrounded by pretty wildflowers and birds.
The art in the book has a unique style. It mixes old-fashioned looks, like pictures from Colonial America, with a cool, colorful vibe from the 1960s. In 1969, the book was even turned into a short, animated movie! This film was directed by Gene Deitch and produced by Morton Schindel of Weston Woods Studios. It was later released on DVD in 2008.
Meet the Characters
The book features several interesting characters. Each one plays a part in getting the cannon ready. Their names are clever because they rhyme with the action they perform!
- Drummer Hoff: He is the king's drummer. He is the one who fires the cannon.
- Private Parriage: He is Drummer Hoff's young private. He brings the carriage for the cannon.
- Corporal Farrell: He is the corporal who gets the barrel.
- Sergeant Chowder: He is the aging sergeant who brings the powder.
- Captain Bammer: He is the captain who gets the rammer.
- Major Scott: He is the major who gets the shot (the cannonball).
- General Border: He is the general who rides a horse. He gives Drummer Hoff the order to fire.
