Drupatee Ramgoonai, born on March 2, 1958, is a famous musician from Trinidad and Tobago. She is known for her unique style of music called chutney and chutney soca. Drupatee actually created the term "chutney soca" in 1987 with her first album. This album had songs in both English and Hindustani languages.
Her biggest hit came in 1988 with the song "(Roll Up the Tassa) Mr. Bissessar." This song was so popular it almost won the Road March title during Carnival. Drupatee helped make tassa drumming and chutney soca music a big part of Carnival celebrations. Her hard work also led to exciting music competitions like the Chutney Soca Monarch.

Drupatee Ramgoonai was born on March 2, 1958, in a village called Charlo Village in Penal, Trinidad and Tobago. She grew up in a Hindu Indian family. From a very young age, Drupatee started singing with her mother at the mandir, which is a Hindu place of worship.
She then began to learn Indian classical singing from a skilled teacher named Ustad James Ramsewak. Drupatee also appeared on a popular Indian cultural show called Mastana Bahar. She won the local song category in both 1983 and 1984.
Her Music Journey
In 1987, Drupatee recorded her first special song that blended different music styles. It was called "Chutney Soca." This song became quite popular in the calypso tents, which are places where musicians perform. Drupatee Ramgoonai is known as the "mother of chutney soca" because she was the first to use this term.
The next year, in 1988, she released her famous song "Mr Bissessar (Roll Up de Tassa)." She has also released many other well-known songs. Some of these include "Pepper," "Hotter Than a Chulha," "Careless Driver," and "Motilal." She also sang "Wuk Up D Ladki" with Machel Montano.
Drupatee made history by being the first woman of Indian descent to sing calypso and soca. She helped break down barriers for women and people of Indian heritage in these music styles.
In 2016, Drupatee signed an agreement with Fox Fuse. This made all her music available digitally around the world for the first time.
