Drury railway station was an important train stop in New Zealand. It was located on the North Island Main Trunk line. This line is a major railway that runs through the North Island.
The station was part of the Auckland railway network. It helped people travel to and from areas south of Auckland.
History of Drury Station
The idea for a railway in this area started a long time ago. In 1863, a special law was passed by Parliament. This law allowed the building of a railway line. It would connect the towns of Auckland and Drury. There was also a plan for a branch line to Onehunga.
The Drury railway station first opened its doors in October 1874. Many years later, in 1918, a new station building was constructed. This new building was on a different site. It also took over the role of the nearby Runciman railway station.
Drury station served the community for many decades. However, it eventually closed down. The last day of operation for the station was May 21, 1972.
Future Plans for Trains in Drury
Even though the old station closed, new train services are planned for the Drury area. In 2017, the government suggested building new stations. These would be for Drury West and Paerata. This plan was part of a large project to support new housing.
In 2020, the government announced a big investment. They set aside $247 million for new stations. These new stations will be called Drury West and Drury East. Construction for these modern stations is expected to begin in 2023. This will bring train travel back to the Drury area.
