Biography
Early Life and Artistic Beginnings
DuEwa Frazier was born in Brooklyn, New York. She grew up in Queens, New York, and St. Louis, Missouri. Her parents encouraged her to explore art from a young age. She was introduced to theater, dance, music, and books.
At just five years old, she was in her first play. She played Rosa Parks, a famous civil rights leader. DuEwa also started dance lessons early. She took classes in Queens and later in St. Louis.
Education and Teaching
DuEwa Frazier studied English at Hampton University, earning a Bachelor of Arts degree. Later, she earned a Master of Science degree in Curriculum & Teaching (Literacy) from Fordham University in 2006. She also received a Master of Fine Arts (M.F.A.) degree in Creative Writing from The New School in New York City.
While in graduate school, Frazier taught writing to students in Brooklyn. She worked as a Writer-In-Residence for Teachers & Writers Collaborative. As an educator, she has taught English and theater arts to adults. She also created special lessons to teach poetry and writing to students.
Her Work as an Author and Performer
DuEwa Frazier has written several poetry books, a children's book, and novels for teenagers. She also edited and published an important book called Check the Rhyme: An Anthology of Female Poets & Emcees in 2006. This book was nominated for two awards in 2007: the NAACP Image Award and the AALAS Book Awards. In 2010, it received an Honorable Mention from the Writer's Digest International Self Publishing Awards.
Frazier also wrote and performed a one-woman show called Flash Femininity. This show talked about important topics like women's health, hip hop, and self-esteem. She performed it at places like Sister's Uptown Bookstore and The Nuyorican Poet's Café. She has also been featured in a poetry documentary and acted in plays and a short film.
