Early Life and Family
Dudley Alexander Sydney Cosby was the son of Pole Cosby. His family lived in a place called Stradbally in County Laois, which was known as Queen's County back then. His mother was Mary Dodwell. His grandfather was also named Dudley Cosby.
A Career in Politics and Diplomacy
Dudley Cosby started his public career in 1763.
Serving in Parliament
He was chosen to be a representative for Carrick. This meant he was a member of the Irish House of Commons. The House of Commons was like a parliament or a group of elected people who helped make laws for Ireland. He held this position until 1768.
Working as a Diplomat
In 1763, Dudley Cosby also became a diplomat. He was appointed as the Minister Resident to Denmark. A Minister Resident is a type of ambassador. Their job is to represent their country in another nation. They help keep good relationships between countries.
He went to Copenhagen, the capital of Denmark, in February 1764. His role was to help another experienced diplomat there. However, he returned to Britain the very next year.
Becoming a Baron
In 1768, Dudley Cosby received a special honor. He was given the title of Lord Sydney. This made him a Baron in the Peerage of Ireland. Being a Baron meant he was part of the nobility, a group of people with special titles and often land. His full title was Lord Sydney, of Leix, Baron Stradbally.
Family Life and Legacy
Lord Sydney married Lady Isabella in December 1773. She was the daughter of Thomas St Lawrence, 1st Earl of Howth.
Sadly, Lord Sydney died just a month later, in January 1774. Because he had no children, his title of Baron Sydney ended with him. Lady Sydney lived much longer and passed away in October 1836.
