The Dudley House, also known as the Perry-Dudley House, is a special old building in Exeter, New Hampshire. It was built around 1805. This house is a great example of a building style called Federal architecture. It's also famous because two important doctors from the 1800s lived and worked there. In 1971, the Dudley House was added to the National Register of Historic Places. This means it's an important historical site in the United States. Today, the house is used for offices.

What Does the Dudley House Look Like?
The Dudley House is easy to spot in downtown Exeter. It's on Front Street, right across from the Congregational Church and the Town Hall.
Outside the House
The house is made of wood and has three floors. It has a special kind of roof called a hip roof. This roof slopes down on all four sides. Inside the house, there are two brick chimneys. The front of the house has five windows and a main door in the middle. This door has a small roof over it, called a portico, held up by two columns. Next to the door, there are tall, narrow windows called sidelight windows. Above the door, there's another window called a transom window.
Inside the House
When you go inside, you'll find a main hallway in the middle of the house. This is called a center hall plan. The main stairs go up from the back of this hall. Later, in the 1800s, more parts were added to the house. These included an extra wing, called an ell, and a barn for carriages.
Who Lived in the Dudley House?
The Dudley House was built between 1805 and 1813. It's one of the best examples of Federal architecture in Exeter.
The Perry Family
The first owner was Dr. William Perry. He was a very important doctor in Exeter for many years. His son, William Gilman Perry, also became a doctor and lived in the house. He took over his father's medical practice. It's thought that a famous writer named Sarah Orne Jewett might have visited the house. She was a friend of the Perry family.
The Dudley Family
Later, Dr. Perry's daughter married a man named Albertus Dudley. His family was also important in Exeter's history. The house stayed with the Dudley family until 1935.
