A Look Back: History of Dudleyville
Dudleyville has an interesting past. In the 1870s, ranchers started bringing their cattle to the lands along the San Pedro River. A place for stagecoaches to stop opened in the late 1870s. This stop was on the road between Globe and Tucson.
On May 8, 1881, William Dudley Harrington became the first postmaster. He ran the new post office in what was then named Dudleyville. William and his wife, Amanda Jane Crowley, had moved from Missouri. They settled on a farm along the San Pedro River.
For about 25 years, Dudleyville was an important local center. It had the stage stop, a store, a post office, farms, and ranches. Miners also lived nearby. However, a new town called Winkleman opened in 1904. It was built about a mile north of Dudleyville. A new railroad line, the Phoenix & Eastern Railroad, reached Winkleman. This made Winkleman the new main hub, and Dudleyville became a smaller community.
