The Duke of Arcos (Spanish: Duque de Arcos) is a special title in Spain that passes down through families. It was first given out in 1493 by Queen Isabella I. The first person to get this title was Rodrigo Ponce de León, who was already the 4th Count of Arcos.
This title was one of the very first to be called a 'Grandee of Spain' in 1520. Being a Grandee meant you were very important in the Spanish court. Today, all Grandees have the same high rank.
The title gets its name from the town of Arcos de la Frontera. This town is located in the Cádiz province of Spain.
The 4th Duke of Arcos was even a character in an opera. The opera was called Salvator Rosa and was created in 1874 by Antônio Carlos Gomes.
