Dumbledore's Army facts for kids
Dumbledore's Army (often called the D.A.) is a secret group in the Harry Potter books by J.K. Rowling. It starts in the fifth book, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, and continues in the last book, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, led by Neville Longbottom. This group was formed to help students learn how to defend themselves against Voldemort, a powerful dark wizard.
The main leader, Harry Potter, teaches his friends how to use defensive spells. The idea for the D.A. came from Hermione Granger. She realized that the new Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher, Dolores Umbridge, was not teaching them useful defense spells. So, Hermione wanted students to learn these important skills on their own.
Why the D.A. Was Formed
During Harry Potter's fifth year at Hogwarts, the Ministry of Magic sent Dolores Umbridge to teach Defense Against the Dark Arts. She refused to teach students practical spells to defend themselves. Instead, she only wanted them to read from a textbook.
Many students felt worried because they knew Voldemort had returned. They wanted to be ready to protect themselves. Hermione Granger suggested that Harry teach them because he had faced Voldemort many times.
