History
Periods Iron Age

Dun Hallin is an ancient stone tower called a broch. It was built a very long time ago during the Iron Age. You can find it on the beautiful Isle of Skye in Scotland.

Where is Dun Hallin?

Dun Hallin is located on the Waternish peninsula, which is part of the Isle of Skye. It sits just east of a small village called Hallin. This ancient site is on a high, rocky area. From here, you can look out over a green valley and the sea.

What Does Dun Hallin Look Like?

Dun Hallin is a large, circular stone building. It measures about 17.4 metres across on the outside. The inside space is about 10.5 metres wide. Some of the walls still stand quite tall, up to 3.8 metres high on the north and west sides.

The main entrance to the broch is on the southeast side. It is a bit ruined now, but you can still see where people would have walked in. On each side of the entrance, there were small, oval rooms called guard cells. These were likely used by guards or for storage. Today, you can mostly see the one on the right side.

Inside the broch, there is a lot of fallen stone covered by grass. On the southwest side, you can spot a "mural gallery." This is a passage built within the thickness of the wall. There is also a stone lintel, which is a big stone beam, still in place over a doorway there. When the broch was checked in 1921, six steps of an inside staircase were found, but they are not visible anymore.

How Was Dun Hallin Protected?

Besides its strong walls, Dun Hallin had extra defenses. An outer stone wall runs around the edge of the rocky hill where the broch stands. This wall is still quite high, about 6 metres tall on the south side. This shows how important it was to protect the people living inside.

Archaeologists have not yet dug up the site to learn more about it. This means there might be many secrets still hidden beneath the ground!
