History
Periods Iron Age

Dun Skudiburgh is an ancient fort in Scotland. It is found near Uig on the Isle of Skye. This fort was built a very long time ago. It sits on a small, steep hill. This hill is about 60 meters (200 feet) above the water. The water is called Loch Snizort.

What is Dun Skudiburgh?

Dun Skudiburgh is a special kind of ancient fort. It is known as a dun. A dun is a strong, round stone fort. These forts were built in the Iron Age. This was a time before written history in Britain.

The fort at Dun Skudiburgh has a unique feature. Part of it is a vitrified fort. This means the stones were heated so much they melted. They fused together like glass. This made the walls extra strong.

Exploring the Fort's Walls

The main part of the fort has a ruined wall. This wall is about 3 meters (10 feet) wide. It forms an oval shape. The area inside is about 45 meters (150 feet) long. It is also about 36 meters (120 feet) wide.

Outside this main wall, there are more walls. To the east, there is a long wall. It stretches for about 97 meters (320 feet). On the north side, there are two shorter walls. You can find an entrance between these outer walls.

How the Fort Was Built

Experts believe Dun Skudiburgh was built in at least two stages. This means people worked on it at different times. They added to it or changed it. Some parts of the walls look older. These older parts are found on the west, south, and southeast sides. They show how the fort grew over time.
