Allocasuarina duncanii, often called Duncan's sheoak, is a small tree. It belongs to the Allocasuarina family and grows naturally in Tasmania, an island state of Australia.

What is Duncan's Sheoak?

Duncan's sheoak is a small tree that can grow up to 8 metres (26 ft) tall. It looks a bit like a conifer tree, which means it has needle-like leaves and often a cone-shaped form, similar to a pine tree.

Where Does Duncan's Sheoak Live?

This special tree is only found in the south-east part of Tasmania. It grows in specific areas like Snug Tiers, the East and West Wellington Ranges, Ridgeway, and South Bruny Island.

Duncan's sheoak prefers to grow in a certain type of rocky ground called dolerite. This is a hard, dark rock. You can usually find these trees growing at higher elevations, between 600 to 700 metres (1,969 to 2,297 ft) above sea level.

How Many Duncan's Sheoaks Are There?

Scientists have found about ten different groups, or "populations," of Duncan's sheoak trees. These groups are spread out over an area of about 774 square kilometres (299 sq mi).

There are many of these trees, with an estimated 120,000 to 150,000 mature trees in total. Even with these numbers, the species is considered "Vulnerable." This means it faces a high risk of becoming endangered in the future if its habitat is not protected.
