The Duncan Coffee Company is a business that roasts (cooks) and sells coffee. They sell coffee under their own name, but they also provide coffee for other well-known brands like Shipley Do-Nuts and Bright and Early Coffee.
The Story of Duncan Coffee
The story of Duncan Coffee Company began in 1901. A person named J.W. O'Neal started a coffee shop in Nashville, Tennessee. His shop helped create Maxwell House Coffee. This happened when they convinced the famous Maxwell House Hotel to use their special coffee blend.
Later, J.W. O'Neal's nephew, Herschel Duncan, created a popular coffee blend called Maryland Club. This blend became very famous. Herschel Duncan then started the Duncan Coffee Company.
After Herschel Duncan passed away, the company was sold. The new owners quickly created two new coffee brands: Admiration Coffee and Bright and Early Coffee. Bright and Early Coffee is still sold today.
In 1957, a man named Charles Duncan Jr. helped buy the company back. He had worked for the U.S. government as a high-ranking official. After this, a big company called The Coca-Cola Company bought Duncan Coffee. Later, another large company, Procter & Gamble, owned it. Finally, the company returned to the Duncan family when Herschel Mills Duncan IV bought it back.
