Dundas, Ohio facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Dundas is a small place in Vinton County, Ohio, in the United States. It's called an unincorporated community. This means it's a group of homes and businesses that isn't officially a town or city with its own local government. Instead, it's part of the larger county. Dundas is easy to find because it's located right where two main roads, State Route 324 and State Route 93, meet.

History of Dundas

Dundas has an interesting past that goes back to the mid-1800s.

How Dundas Started

Dundas began in 1857. Back then, it wasn't called Dundas. It was known as McArthur Junction. This name came about because a big railway company, the B&O railroad, extended its train tracks to this spot. Train lines were very important for travel and moving goods in those days.

The Post Office

Even before the railroad arrived, a post office was set up in the area in 1856. It was named Dundas. This post office served the community for a very long time, helping people send and receive letters and packages. It finally closed its doors in 1983.

Moving Houses to Dundas

Something unique happened in Dundas in the 1950s. Many houses from a nearby place called Oreton, Ohio were actually moved to Dundas. This was likely done to bring more people and homes to the growing community around the railroad junction.
