Dunhams Wood is a special forest that is privately owned, meaning it belongs to a person or family, not the public. It's mostly filled with broadleaved trees, which are trees that have wide, flat leaves, like oak or maple. Sometimes, this beautiful woodland is opened up for people to visit.

The trees in Dunhams Wood were planted over six years, starting in 1985. You can find this woodland about 2 miles (3.2 km) outside a town called March, Cambridgeshire, in an area known as Fenland.

Discovering Dunhams Wood

Dunhams Wood was first owned by a couple named Margaret and Arthur Dunham. They loved sharing their woodland and would open it to the public during the summer months. When visitors came, they could enjoy fun activities like treasure hunts and other exciting games hidden among the trees.

The Dunhams Wood Railway

One of the most amazing things about Dunhams Wood is its very own railway! It's a miniature railroad, which means it's a smaller version of a real train track. The tracks are 7.25 inches (18.4 cm) wide, and there's about 800 yards (730 meters) of track that winds its way through the entire woodland. Imagine riding a tiny train through the trees!

Fun Activities and Events

Besides the railway, Dunhams Wood was also a place for many different events. People could come to watch wildlife, like birds and other animals, in their natural home. It was also a great spot for photography, with all the beautiful trees and scenery. Sometimes, people even practiced archery there, which is the sport of shooting arrows with a bow.

In 1992, Margaret and Arthur Dunham were even interviewed about their woodland on a radio show called Breakfast with a Farmer on BBC Radio 4.

The Wood's History

After Arthur Dunham passed away on January 13, 2013, Dunhams Wood was no longer open to the public. It was then put up for sale and found a new owner in August 2014. Even though the ownership changed, the miniature railway is still there in the wood.
