Dunstable and Whipsnade Downs is a special natural area in Bedfordshire, England. It covers about 73.4 hectares, which is like 100 football fields! This area is known as a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI). It was officially recognized in 1987 because of its unique wildlife and plants.

The Downs are part of the beautiful Chilterns Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. A big part of this land is looked after by the National Trust.

What Makes Dunstable Downs Special?

Dunstable Downs is the highest point in the east of England. Imagine standing on top of the world, or at least the highest spot around! From here, you can see amazing views of the countryside.

Ancient History and Nature

This area has a long and interesting history. You can find five thousand year old burial mounds here. These are ancient graves from people who lived a very long time ago. There's also a medieval rabbit warren, which was a special place where rabbits were kept in the Middle Ages.

The site stretches for about 3 kilometers between the towns of Dunstable and Whipsnade. It's a steep slope, like a big natural ramp.

Amazing Plants and Butterflies

The slopes of Dunstable Downs are home to special plants. These plants love the chalky soil found here. This type of land is called chalk downland. You'll see many different kinds of wild flowers, grasses, and even some bushes.

This area is also super important for butterflies. Many different types of butterflies live and thrive here. They love the plants and the open spaces. It's a great place to spot them fluttering around on a sunny day!
