The Story of Dupplin Castle
Early Days and Battles
The first known owner of Dupplin Castle was Sir William Oliphant. He owned it in the late 1200s. A very important event happened nearby in 1332. This was the Battle of Dupplin. In this battle, Edward Baliol won a big victory.
Changes and Rebuilding
The original castle was destroyed in 1461. But it was soon rebuilt. The Oliphant family owned Dupplin for about 400 years. In 1623, the 5th Lord Oliphant sold the castle. It then became the property of the Hay family. The castle was given to the 1st Earl of Kinnoull. He was also Lord Chancellor for King Charles I.
The castle was rebuilt again in 1688. It kept its older tower and some parts of the earlier castle. In 1827, a big fire damaged the castle. This led to a full rebuilding and restoration.
Modern History
The castle was rebuilt as a country house between 1828 and 1832. This work was done by architect William Burn. It cost a lot of money, about £30,000 back then.
In 1911, a famous whisky maker bought Dupplin Castle. His name was Sir John Alexander Dewar. Five years later, he became the 1st Baron Forteviot of Dupplin. There was another fire inside the castle in the 1920s or 1930s. The castle was finally taken down in 1967. A new house was built on the same foundations in 1970.
