Durand is an unincorporated community in Meriwether County, Georgia, United States. An unincorporated community is a place that does not have its own local government. Instead, it is governed by the county or state.
History of Durand
Durand has an interesting past. It was once known by a different name.
Early Names and Changes
The community was first called "Stinson." This name honored James W. Stinson, who was an early settler in the area. Later, the name changed to "Durand." This new name came from the Durand Realty Company. This company helped to develop the land and promote the town site.
Post Office and Town Status
A post office opened in Stinson in 1883. It helped people send and receive mail. In 1911, the post office's name changed to Durand. However, the post office eventually closed its doors in 1957.
In 1910, the Georgia General Assembly officially recognized Durand as a town. This meant it had its own local government and rules. But in 1995, the town's official status was removed. This is called repealing its municipal charter. After that, Durand became an unincorporated community again.
