Dutch Square is a popular shopping mall located in Columbia, South Carolina. It's a place where you can find many different stores and places to eat. The mall also has an AMC movie theater, perfect for watching the latest films. Its main, larger stores, called "anchor stores," are Burlington Coat Factory and Office Depot.
History of Dutch Square Mall
Dutch Square was built by a company called Caine Company in 1970. When it first opened, some of the big stores inside included Woolco, J. B. White, and Tapp's department stores. Other well-known shops were Woolworth, Eckerd Drug, and Morrison's Cafeteria.
When the mall first opened its doors in 1970, it was a very big deal! It was even advertised as the "largest mall in the Carolinas."
Changes Over the Years
In 1993, the company managing Dutch Square faced some tough times. They lost a few of their big anchor stores. However, the mall got a fresh start when a new owner, Phillips Edison, bought it in 1995.
A few years later, in 1997, the city of Columbia officially included the mall property within its city limits. This meant that the city would receive tax money from the mall. Soon after this, the mall was updated and made bigger by its owner, adding more space for shops.
In late 2014, one of the major department stores, Belk, announced it would close its Dutch Square location. They decided to focus on a new, bigger store in another part of Columbia.
