The dutchie is a special kind of doughnut that became very popular in Canada. It was made famous by the Tim Hortons restaurant chain.

This doughnut is square-shaped and made with a special dough that rises (called yeast-lifted). It has raisins inside and is covered with a sweet, sugary glaze. The dutchie was one of the first two baked goods offered at Tim Hortons when it opened in 1964. The other was the apple fritter.

In 1991, a newspaper called the Toronto Star said that the dutchie and apple fritter were the most popular types of fried dough at Tim Hortons. Even when the paper did a blind taste test, readers still loved the dutchie the most! Sadly, the dutchie was later taken off the regular menu.

The Popular Dutchie Doughnut

The dutchie was a big hit in Canada. In 1988, the Toronto Star newspaper asked its readers about their favorite Tim Hortons items. The dutchie won two gold medals in this informal poll!

In 2009, The New York Times wrote about Tim Hortons stores opening in New York City. They noticed that special doughnuts like the dutchie were hard to find there. The article explained that Tim Hortons often flash-freezes its doughnuts and ships them to stores. This is different from places like Krispy Kreme, which bake their doughnuts fresh in the store.

Even though the dutchie was hard to find, American visitors often looked for it, especially the "raisin-studded Dutchie." Canadians were happy that Tim Hortons became a Canada-based company again. The dutchie is no longer a regular item on the Tim Hortons menu. However, it was brought back for a short time in June 2017. This was part of a celebration for Canada's 150th birthday, with many "Canadian-themed" products.

Dutchie Timbits

Tim Hortons also used to sell a smaller version of the dutchie. This tiny, bite-sized doughnut was called a "donut hole" or a Timbit.

In February 2014, Tim Hortons announced that the Dutchie Timbit was no longer available. They said it was because it wasn't as popular as other Timbit flavors.
