Abandoned boat at St Helen's Duver, Isle of Wight

A duver (pronounced like "cover") is a special word used on the Isle of Wight. It describes a low area of land near the coast. This land can sometimes get covered by the sea during high tides or storms.

What is a Duver?

The word "duver" is a local term, or dialect, from the Isle of Wight. It helps people describe a specific type of coastal land. Imagine a flat or slightly raised area right next to the ocean. Sometimes, the sea water can flow over it.

Originally, many duvers were areas with sand dunes. Sand dunes are hills of sand formed by the wind. They often protect the land behind them from the sea.

Where Can You Find Duvers?

The name "duver" is part of several place names on the Isle of Wight. For example, Dover Street in Ryde was once a road leading down to a duver.

You can still find coastal areas named duvers today. Some well-known examples include:

  • St Helens Duver
  • Seaview Duver
  • Hamstead Dover

Duvers Today: Are They Still Sand Dunes?

Over time, many sand dunes on the Isle of Wight have changed. Some have been built on or lost for other reasons. This means that some places called "duver" might not look like sand dunes anymore.

The biggest duver that still has sand dunes is St Helens Duver. It's a great example of this unique coastal landform.
