Dwayne Arlan Alons (born October 30, 1946 – died November 29, 2014) was an American politician and military leader. He was a member of the Republican Party. He served in the Iowa House of Representatives from 1999 to 2014. During this time, he represented two different areas: the 5th district and later the 4th district.
Dwayne Alons was also a high-ranking officer in the Iowa Air National Guard. He reached the rank of brigadier general. He passed away in 2014 due to cancer. After his death, John Kooiker took his place in office.
Early Life and Education
Dwayne Alons was one of four children. His parents were Gerrit and Hattie Alons. He grew up and went to Boyden–Hull High School, graduating in 1964.
After high school, he continued his education at several colleges.
- He earned a Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degree in mathematics from Northwestern College in 1968.
- In 1974, he received his Master of Science (M.S.) degree in management from the University of Arkansas.
- He also completed programs from the Air Command and Staff College and the National Security Management Course.
- In 1990, he graduated from the Army War College.
Military Career and Service
Dwayne Alons began his military journey in 1969. He became an officer through the Officer Training School. He was a skilled pilot and flew many different types of planes. He had over 3,860 hours flying aircraft like the F-4, F-100, A-7, and F-16.
He became the chief of staff at the Iowa Air National Guard Headquarters. In this important role, he made sure that all units were ready for their missions. He also advised the Assistant Adjutant General on Guard-related matters.
Time as a Legislator
Dwayne Alons was a member of the Iowa House of Representatives for many years. He worked on several important committees.
- He served on the Agriculture Committee, which deals with farming.
- He was also part of the Economic Growth Committee.
- He worked on the Judiciary Committee, which handles legal matters.
- He led the Veterans Affairs committee, helping military veterans.
- He was also a member of the Transportation, Infrastructure, and Capitals Appropriations Subcommittee.
Alons was still serving in office when he passed away on November 29, 2014.
