Dwight E. Davis, born on October 28, 1949, is a retired American professional basketball player. He played college basketball at the University of Houston from 1969 to 1972. After college, he was chosen as the 3rd player overall in the 1972 NBA draft by the Cleveland Cavaliers. Dwight was known by his nickname, "Double D", and played for five seasons in the NBA.

College Basketball Journey

Dwight Davis graduated from Worthing High School in Houston, Texas. He then went to the University of Houston to play basketball. He was recruited by the famous coach, Guy Lewis.

Sophomore Season Success

In his second year, the 1969–1970 season, Dwight was a star player. He scored about 20 points and grabbed over 10 rebounds per game. His team, the Houston Cougars, had a great record of 25 wins and 5 losses. They even made it to the 1970 NCAA University Division basketball tournament.

Junior and Senior Year Highlights

During the 1970–1971 season, Dwight continued to play well. He averaged 20 points, 12 rebounds, and almost 3 assists per game. The Cougars finished with 22 wins and 7 losses. In the 1971 NCAA University Division basketball tournament, Dwight scored 30 points in one game. He helped his team win their first game.

In his final year, 1971–1972, Dwight's performance was even better. He averaged 24 points, almost 12 rebounds, and nearly 4 assists. Houston ended the season with 20 wins and 7 losses. They also played in the NCAA Tournament again. Dwight earned a degree in Business from Houston. He is also a member of the Bauer Business School Circle of Honor.

NBA Career Highlights

Dwight Davis was picked third overall in the 1972 NBA draft by the Cleveland Cavaliers. As a rookie, he averaged 9.4 points and 7.0 rebounds per game. He was coached by Bill Fitch. Dwight was named to the NBA All-Rookie First Team. This means he was one of the best new players in the league that year.

Best Seasons with Cleveland

Dwight had his best year in the NBA during the 1973–1974 season. He averaged 12.5 points, 8.5 rebounds, and 2.4 assists. The next season, 1974–1975, he continued to play well for the Cavaliers. He averaged nearly 10 points and 6 rebounds.

Moving to Golden State

On May 29, 1975, Dwight was traded to the Golden State Warriors. He played 72 games with the Warriors in the 1975–1976 season. He helped the team reach the Western Division Finals.

Career-Ending Injury

In the 1976–1977 season, Dwight played in 33 games. Sadly, he suffered a serious injury on February 20, 1977. He tore a muscle in his leg during a game against the Boston Celtics. This injury ended his professional basketball career.

He has been very involved with the National Basketball Retired Players Association (NBRPA). He served on their board of directors from 2014 to 2018. He was also the past chair and vice-chair.

In 2007, the New Hampshire Governor John Lynch appointed Dwight to the N.H. Workforce Youth Council. He became the chair in 2008. Dwight has continued to serve on various boards. These include the Greater Seacoast United Way, Prospero Health, and Cambridge Trust. He is also the President of the Black Heritage Trail of New Hampshire.

Honors and Recognition

In 2006, Dwight Davis was honored by the University of Houston. He was inducted into their "Hall of Honor." This recognizes his outstanding achievements in college basketball.
