Dörte went on to study architecture at two important universities. She attended the Braunschweig University of Technology and RWTH Aachen. At Aachen, she learned from a very famous architect named Gottfried Böhm. He had even won the Pritzker Prize, which is like a Nobel Prize for architects!
While still a student, Dörte worked on a big project for Böhm. It was called the Züblin House in Stuttgart. She did such a great job leading this project that after she graduated, she continued working for him for five more years.

In 1984, Dörte Gatermann decided to start her own architecture company. She opened Gatermann + Schossig in Cologne with her partner, Elmar Schossig, whom she later married.

Dörte was also asked to teach at several universities. In 2002, she became a professor at the Technische Universität Darmstadt. She taught there until 2007. After that, she decided to focus completely on her own architecture business in Cologne.
One special project she worked on while teaching was designing the "Hall of Fame" museum for women. She also created a traveling exhibition for the photographer Bettina Flitner.
The Famous Triangle Tower

In 2006, her firm, Gatermann + Schossig, won a special award. The Pilkington glass company gave them the "Synthesis - Architect and Industry" prize. They won it because of their clever and new ways of using glass in the Triangle Tower.
