E.T., I Love You and Other Extra-Terrestrial Songs for Children is a music album. It was released in 1983 by a group called the Starlight Children's Chorus. The album came out under the Kid Stuff Records label. A main song on the album is "E.T., I Love You" by Buckner & Garcia. This song was first created for the famous movie E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial.

About the Album's Songs

The song "E.T., I Love You" was first written by Buckner & Garcia. They recorded and released their version in 1982. It came out as a single song on a small record. Their version was a slow, gentle song. Steven Spielberg, the movie director, liked it. He wanted it to be a tribute song for his film E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial.

However, another singer, Neil Diamond, also made a tribute song. This caused a problem for the record company. They decided to release Neil Diamond's song, "Heartlight", first. Buckner & Garcia's song was released later that year. Their song is still seen as part of the movie's merchandise. Buckner & Garcia even performed their song live in 1982. They received an award for being "Songwriters of the Year."

The album E.T., I Love You and Other Extra-Terrestrial Songs for Children was released by Kid Stuff Records. This company focuses on making music just for kids. The album includes "E.T., I Love You" and six other songs about aliens. It also starts with an overture called "E.T. Overture." In this part, a child-like voice asks questions like "Where did you come from? Another world?".

Some songs on the album have unique sounds. "So Near and Yet So Far" is a fast-paced song. It even has robot sounds and a flushing toilet sound effect. "Please Phone Ring-a-Ling" sounds like doo-wop music. Even though the group is called "Children's Starlight Chorus," the songs are not sung by kids. An adult female singer tries to sound like a young boy. The album does not use any music or sounds directly from the E.T. movie.

Who Knew About the Song?

Many years later, one of the original songwriters, Mr. Garcia, was asked about the version of "E.T., I Love You" on this album. He said he did not know about the Starlight Children's Chorus version. However, Buckner & Garcia later included their original song on their own albums. They put it on a 1999 release called Now & Then. They also added it to a 2002 re-release of their popular album, Pac-Man Fever.
