Edward Mealy El (born Edward Mealy; 1870–1935) was an important American religious leader. He led the Moorish Science Temple of America after its founder, Noble Drew Ali, passed away.
Mealy El was chosen by Noble Drew Ali for several important roles. In 1927, he became an Assistant Chairman. Later that year, he was made General Chairman. By 1928, he was named Grand Sheik and Chairman of the Moorish Science Temple of America. He was also promoted to Supreme Grand Sheik, a top leadership position. All his appointments were approved by the group's leaders. After Noble Drew Ali died in 1929, Mealy El continued to lead the organization until his own death in 1935.
Edward Mealy El's Early Life
Edward Mealy was born on September 17, 1870. His birthplace was a town called Wilkerson in Mississippi. This town was later renamed Huntington and then became abandoned.
Joining the Moorish Science Temple
Edward Mealy El later moved to Chicago, Illinois. There, he became involved with the Moorish Science Temple of America. This was an African-American Islamic religious movement led by Noble Drew Ali. Mealy El became the Governor, or pastor, of the main temple in Chicago.
