Eamonn Doyle (born in 1969) is a talented Irish artist. He is known for his amazing photography, especially his street photos of Dublin. He also creates electronic music, works as a DJ, and owns a record label called D1 Recordings.

His photo-books, like i, ON, and End, show different sides of Dublin life. A famous photographer, Martin Parr, even called his book i "the best street photobook in a decade"!

Early Life and Learning

Eamonn Doyle was born in Dublin, Ireland. He went to college at Dún Laoghaire College of Art and Design. There, he studied commercial photography from 1988 to 1991.

Making Music and D1 Recordings

Before becoming a famous photographer, Eamonn Doyle spent about 15 years in the music business. Around 1993, he and his friends set up a recording studio. It was in the basement of his building on Parnell Street in Dublin.

Some of the music they made was released on a record label he helped start, called Dead Elvis. Eamonn also became a DJ, playing music for crowds.

In 1994, he started his own techno music label, D1 Recordings. It was named after the Dublin postcode where it was located. D1 Recordings released music by artists from Dublin and other places. This label also had a recording studio, a record shop, and a company to send out music. They even ran a weekly club night for over ten years!

A writer from The Irish Times said in 2015 that D1 Recordings is "one of the most important chapters in recent Irish music history." Eamonn Doyle also created his own electronic music. He releases his songs on D1 Recordings and other labels.

Dublin Electronic Arts Festival

Eamonn Doyle also started the Dublin Electronic Arts Festival (DEAF) in 2001. He ran this festival every year until 2009. The festival lasted for almost a week. It had many events in different places across Dublin.

DEAF stopped because it lost its funding. Both money from the Arts Council and other sponsors stopped. This happened because of the economic problems in Ireland after 2008.

His Photography Work

Eamonn Doyle went back to photography in 2008. He started taking street photographs of people. He focused on people on Parnell Street and O'Connell Street in Dublin.

He made a series of three photo-books about Dublin. These books were very popular.

  • i (2014): This book was inspired by the writer Samuel Beckett. Eamonn photographed older working-class people. He took pictures from above, making it seem like he was looking down on them.
  • ON (2015): This book was set in the same Dublin streets. But this time, Eamonn photographed younger people from different backgrounds. While i showed a timeless Dublin, ON showed a modern city. It showed people walking with purpose, focused on where they were going.
  • End (2016): This book was the final one in his Dublin series.

He also created another book called K (2018). This one featured photos taken on the western Atlantic coast of Ireland.

Awards and Recognition

Eamonn Doyle has won several awards for his photography:

  • 2015: He won the Curtin O'Donoghue Photography Prize. This was from the Royal Hibernian Academy in Dublin.
  • 2015: He was a joint winner of the Solas Ireland Award. This award came from Source magazine and the Gallery of Photography in Dublin.
