Earl Jefferson Hamilton (born in 1899, died May 7, 1989) was an important American historian. He was one of the people who helped create the study of economic history, which looks at how money and business have changed over time. He was also a famous hispanist, meaning he was an expert in the history and culture of Spain.

His Life and Work

Earl Hamilton was born in a place called Houlka, Mississippi. He was married to Gladys Dallas Hamilton, and they had a daughter named Sita. Earl and Gladys worked together to do a lot of research on Spain's economic past.

Professor Hamilton taught at several well-known universities. He was a professor at Duke University from 1927 to 1944. After that, he taught at Northwestern University from 1944 to 1947, and then at the University of Chicago from 1947 to 1967. Later, the State University of New York honored him as a "Distinguished Professor of Economic History."

He also helped lead important groups. For seven years, he was the editor of a magazine called Journal of Political Economy. He was also the president of the Economic History Association from 1951 to 1952.

What He Studied

One of Earl Hamilton's biggest contributions was his research on the history of prices in Spain. He studied how prices changed a lot in the 1500s. He called this big change the "Price Revolution." His work helped us understand how the economy worked during that time. His ideas were similar to the economic theories of his time, especially during the period of the crisis of 1929, also known as the Great Depression. He started his research on prices as part of a big international group of scientists.

He passed away on May 7, 1989.

  • American Treasure and the Price Revolution in Spain, 1501-1650 (1934) – This book looked at how gold and silver from the Americas affected prices in Spain.
  • Money, prices and wages in Valencia, Aragon and Navarre, 1351-1500 (1936) – This book focused on money and prices in specific regions of Spain before the Price Revolution.
  • War and Prices in Spain, 1651-1800 (1947) – This book explored how wars affected prices in Spain during a later period.
