Growing Up and Learning

Earl Ofari Hutchinson was born in Chicago, Illinois. He went to Catholic elementary schools and Mt. Carmel High School there. In 1961, he moved to Los Angeles and attended Dorsey High School.

He continued his education at California State University, Los Angeles, where he earned a bachelor's degree in sociology. Later, he received a master's degree in humanities from California State University, Dominguez Hills. His father, Earl Hutchinson Sr., was also an author. His daughter, Sikivu Hutchinson, is a well-known author and speaker, and his son, Fanon Hutchinson, is a documentary videographer.
