Charles Seton, 2nd Earl of Dunfermline.

The title of Earl of Dunfermline was a special honor in the Peerage of Scotland. This means it was a noble rank given to important people in Scotland. The title was first created in 1605. It was given to Alexander Seton. He was already known as the 1st Lord Fyvie. Alexander was the fourth son of George Seton, 7th Lord Seton. You can learn more about his family by looking up the Earl of Winton.

Alexander Seton had already received another title, Lord Fyvie, in 1598. This title was meant to pass to his older brother, John Seton. When Alexander became the Earl of Dunfermline, his son took over the title after him. This son was the second Earl. He held an important job called the Keeper of the Privy Seal of Scotland from 1661 to 1672. Later, his younger son became the fourth Earl. This happened because his older brother, the third Earl, did not have any children. The fourth Earl supported King James II, who was removed from power. Because of this, the Scottish Parliament took away his titles in 1690. He passed away in France in 1694. After his death, the direct male family line of the first Earl ended.
