The East Capitol Car Barn, also known as The Car Barn Condominiums, is an historic building located in Washington, D.C.. You can find it at 1400 East Capitol Street in the Capitol Hill neighborhood. This building has a cool history, changing from a place for streetcars to a home for people!
A Look Back in Time
This interesting building was designed by an architect named Waddy Butler Wood in 1896. It was built in a style called Romanesque Revival. This style looks a bit like old Roman buildings, often with big arches and strong, sturdy walls.
The Car Barn was very important when streetcars in Washington, D.C., were changing. Streetcars are like electric buses that run on tracks in the street. Before this building was made, many streetcars used horses to pull them! But in 1896, they were switching to electricity. This building helped with that big change.
Later, in 1962, the building was used to store buses instead of streetcars. Then, in 1973, the company that owned it was bought by the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority. This group runs the public transportation in D.C. After that, the building was empty for a while.
From Car Barn to Condos
A private company bought the property and decided to give it a new life. They turned the old Car Barn into modern homes called condominiums. Condominiums are like apartments, but you own your specific unit.
The East Capitol Car Barn was added to the National Register of Historic Places on February 5, 1974. This means it's recognized as an important historical site in the United States.
