East Carmel, Ohio facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

East Carmel is a small, quiet place where people live in Columbiana County, which is in the state of Ohio in the United States. It's known as an "unincorporated community." This means it doesn't have its own local government, like a mayor or city council. Instead, it's part of the larger county, but it's still a recognized area where people call home.

History of East Carmel

The story of East Carmel goes back a long time. In 1806, people tried to start a town nearby called Waterford. They even planned out the streets and land lots, which is called "platting." However, no one bought the land, and the idea for Waterford didn't work out.

Later, the name East Carmel became official when a post office was opened there in 1870. A post office is a place where people can send and receive mail. This post office served the community for many years, helping people connect with others through letters and packages. It stayed open until 1904. Even though the post office closed, the name East Carmel continued to be used for this area.
