The East Clarendon Railroad Station is a special old building in Clarendon, Vermont. It was built way back in 1916 by the Rutland Railroad to help people travel and send goods by train. This station was used for 35 years and is now a restaurant! It's also recognized as a historic place, added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1999.

What is the East Clarendon Station?

The East Clarendon Railroad Station is found in central eastern Clarendon, Vermont. It's right where Route 103 meets East Clarendon Road. This road runs next to the active train tracks of the Rutland Railroad.

How Does the Station Look?

This building is made of wood and has one story. It has a wide, sloped roof with big overhangs. These overhangs are supported by cool triangular brackets. The outside of the station is covered with wooden clapboards and bead boarding.

Inside the Historic Building

The station still has its original three rooms inside.

  • The waiting room, where passengers once waited, is now the dining room for the restaurant.
  • The agent's office, where tickets were sold, is now the lunch counter.
  • The freight room, used for storing goods, is now the kitchen.

Many of the original details inside have been carefully restored. Some parts were covered to keep them safe.

A Journey Through Time: Station History

The train line that goes through East Clarendon was built in 1849. This makes it one of Vermont's oldest railway lines! The station itself was built around 1916. It provided important passenger and freight services to the local community.

When Did the Station Move?

The station was used until 1953. After it closed, the building was moved from its original spot. It used to be about 400 feet (120 meters) southeast of where it is now. The station was not placed on a permanent foundation until 1996. That's when it got a big restoration and was turned into a restaurant.

Trains Then and Now

Train traffic on this line completely stopped in 1963. However, the line has since been reopened for freight trains. The old station now serves as a reminder of the important role railroads played in connecting communities.
