East Maitland railway station is a train station in East Maitland, Australia. It's located on the Main Northern line in New South Wales. This station is special because it's a heritage-listed site. It's also the fourth train station to be known as East Maitland. It was added to the New South Wales State Heritage Register in 1999.

Station History

The First Stations

The very first train stop named East Maitland was a temporary one. It was used while a bridge was being built over Wallis Creek. This was near where the Victoria Street station is today.

The second East Maitland station was located north of William Street. It was between the East Maitland Courthouse and the Post Office.

Morpeth Junction and the Third Station

The third station was first called Morpeth Junction. This was when the short Morpeth branch line opened in 1866. This station was about 400 metres west of the current East Maitland station.

The second station closed in 1873. It then became a place for goods trains. Morpeth Junction was then renamed East Maitland.

The Current Station

The station you see today opened in 1914. This happened when the Main Northern line was made wider. Two extra tracks were built for coal trains.

At that time, the Morpeth branch line was changed. This allowed trains to go directly from Newcastle instead of from Maitland. The new East Maitland station became the main junction. The old third East Maitland station then became a goods siding.

The train line to Morpeth closed in 1953. However, the platform for that branch line at East Maitland still remains today.

What Trains Stop Here?

East Maitland station has one island platform. An island platform is like an island in the middle of the tracks. It has two sides for trains to stop.

This station is used by NSW TrainLink Hunter Line services. These trains travel between Newcastle, Maitland, and Telarah. There is also one early morning train service that goes to Scone.
