Station History
The first train station in this area opened on 5 April 1857. It was almost in the same spot as the Victoria Street station we see today. For a while, it was the very last stop on the train line from Newcastle. This was because a bridge over Wallis Creek was still being built.
From 1906 to 1926, you could also catch a steam tram from this station. The tram line connected West and East Maitland.
The building you see now was built in 1877. Later, in 1914, the station was updated. The single platform was changed into an "island platform." This means there are train tracks on both sides of the platform. A footbridge was also added at the same time, making it easier for people to cross the tracks safely.
More recently, from 2017 to 2018, the station got some big upgrades. This was part of a program to make train stations easier for everyone to use. They added three new lifts, new covers over the platforms, and better signs. They also put in bike racks and improved the areas where you can connect to other transport.
Trains and Services
Victoria Street station has one island platform. This platform has two sides, so trains can stop on either side.
The station is used by NSW TrainLink Hunter Line services. These trains travel to and from Newcastle. They also go to other towns like Maitland, Muswellbrook, Scone, Telarah, and Dungog.

Why It's Special: Heritage Listing
Victoria Street railway station is one of the oldest station buildings still standing in the Newcastle area. It is very important because it shows how train travel started in this region.
When the train line first opened in 1857, this station was the end of the line from Newcastle. It stayed that way until the line was extended to the main Maitland railway station a year later.
Even though the station was updated to have an island platform when the train line added more tracks, it still kept its original look and feel. Many other stations on the line were completely rebuilt, but Victoria Street station kept its history. Because it is so old and still shows parts of the very first train line, it is considered very special. The footbridge also adds to its historical value.
Victoria Street railway station was officially added to the New South Wales State Heritage Register on 2 April 1999. This means it is a protected historical site.
