East Mouse seen from the cliffs near Garreg Fawr

East Mouse is a tiny island, also known as Ynys Amlwch in Welsh. It is located just off the northern coast of Anglesey, Wales. This small island is very close to the town of Amlwch, which is why its Welsh name means "Amlwch Island."

East Mouse is one of three small islands in this area that share similar names. The other two are West Mouse and Middle Mouse. These islands are often called "Mice" because of their small size.

About East Mouse

East Mouse is a very small piece of land. It is only about 141 metres (463 feet) long and 61 metres (200 feet) wide at its largest points. Its total area is tiny, less than two acres.

Because of its small size and rocky nature, East Mouse does not have much plant life or many animals living on it. It is mostly a bare rock sticking out of the sea.

The SS Dakota Shipwreck

East Mouse is famous for a historic shipwreck. On May 9, 1877, a large ship named the SS Dakota hit the island and sank. The SS Dakota was a big ship, built in 1874, and weighed 4,332 tons.

When it struck East Mouse, the ship broke into three pieces. However, in a remarkable rescue, all 218 people who were on board the SS Dakota were saved. This event shows the dangers of the sea, but also the bravery of those who helped rescue everyone.
