Middle Mouse as seen from the Anglesey mainland

Middle Mouse (called Ynys Badrig in Welsh, which means 'Patrick's island') is a small, empty island. It's about 1 kilometre (0.6 miles) off the northern coast of Anglesey, Wales. This island is special because it's the most northern point of Wales! It measures up to 207 metres (679 feet) long and 110 metres (360 feet) wide. Its highest point is 16 metres (52 feet) above the sea. Middle Mouse is one of three islands found off the north of Anglesey. The other two are Ynys Amlwch and Maen y Bugail.

The Legend of Saint Patrick

Local stories say that St Patrick was once shipwrecked near Middle Mouse. This event is why the island got its Welsh name, Ynys Badrig. After the shipwreck, he swam to the shore. He then went on to build the nearby church of Llanbadrig around 440 AD. Many people believe this church is the oldest Christian site in Wales.

Wildlife and Underwater Adventures

Middle Mouse is a favorite spot for many sea birds. You can often see cormorants, guillemots, and razorbills there. For people who love scuba diving, the island offers amazing underwater cliffs. These cliffs drop down to 40 metres (130 feet) deep. They are full of exciting marine life to explore. However, the ocean currents around the island can be very strong. Divers need to plan their visit carefully to dive during "slack water." This is a short time when the tide is not moving much.

A Landmark for Ships

In the 1800s, Middle Mouse was an important landmark for ships. It helped guide vessels sailing into the Port of Liverpool. Ships that passed the island without signaling for a special guide, called a pilot, could be fined. In 1863, a ship named S.S. Liverpool sank near Middle Mouse. This happened after it crashed into another ship called Laplata. The S.S. Liverpool was carrying a cargo of tin at the time.

Island Ownership

In 2005, Middle Mouse was put up for sale. It was part of a larger property that measured about 168 acres (0.68 square kilometres).
