What is the East Poultney Historic District?
This historic district is found right around the triangular village green. This green space is bordered by streets like Bird Street and East Main Street. The district also stretches a bit along Main Street and River Street. It covers about 68 acres, which is like 50 football fields! It's a great place to see how a Vermont village grew over time.
How Did East Poultney Start?
The town of Poultney was officially created in 1761. But people didn't start settling here until 1771. East Poultney was the very first town center. It was a busy place in the late 1700s and early 1800s. Small factories and workshops used the power of the Poultney River to run their machines.
Why Did West Poultney Grow Bigger?
Over time, another part of town, then called West Poultney, became more important. Today, we know it as the village of Poultney. West Poultney was located on a major travel route, which is now Vermont Route 30. When the railroad was built, it also went through West Poultney. This helped West Poultney grow much faster. East Poultney then became a quieter place, keeping its historic charm.
What Can You See in the District?
The heart of the district is the village green. You'll find the East Poultney Baptist Church there. It's a beautiful old church built in the Federal style. A local builder named Elisha Scott designed it. You can see his work on many buildings in the area.
There's also an old blacksmith shop from around 1810. A blacksmith is someone who works with metal, shaping it with heat and tools. Later, this building was used to make organs for music. Now, it's a museum run by the Poultney Historical Society. It's a cool place to learn about the village's past!
