East Region (Cameroon) facts for kids
The East Region is one of the ten regions in the country of Cameroon. Its capital city is Bertoua. This region is located in the eastern part of Cameroon. It is a large area, covering about 109,002 square kilometers (about 42,000 square miles). In 2015, about 835,642 people lived there.
Nature and Rivers
The East Region is home to many important rivers. These include the Nyong, the Dja, the Lom, the Kadéï, the Boumba, the Sangha, and the Ngoko. These rivers are important for the environment and for the people living in the region.
A big part of the region, especially the lower two-thirds, is covered by a dense rain forest. This is a special type of forest that gets a lot of rain. It is full of different kinds of plants and animals.
Protecting Wildlife
To protect the amazing nature and animals in the East Region, the government of Cameroon has set up several special areas. These are like big parks where wildlife is safe. They include:
- the Dja Reserve
- Lobéké Park
- the Boumba-Bek Reserve
- the Nki Reserve
These reserves help keep the rainforest healthy and protect animals like gorillas, chimpanzees, and forest elephants.
How the Region is Organized
The East Region is divided into four smaller areas called departments. Each department has its own main town, which is like its capital. These departments help manage the region better.
The four departments are:
- Boumba-et-Ngoko: Its capital is Yokadouma.
- Haut-Nyong: Its capital is Abong-Mbang.
- Kadey: Its capital is Batouri.
- Lom-et-Djérem: Its capital is Bertoua, which is also the capital of the whole East Region.
