A Look Back at Easterly's History
How Easterly Began
Easterly started in the 1870s. Back then, it had a different name: Acorn. The very first people who lived here came from a place called Lake Station. They moved because Lake Station often had "fever epidemics." This means many people there were getting sick. So, they looked for a healthier place to live.
The First Post Office
In 1881, a post office opened in Acorn. This was a big deal! It meant people could send and receive mail. The first person in charge of the post office was Dan Easterly, Sr. The post office stayed open for about ten years. It closed down in 1891.
A New Name and a New Start
The community's name changed to Easterly. This happened when the International-Great Northern Railroad built a train station there. Having a train station was very important. It helped people and goods travel. A new post office opened in Easterly in 1894. Dan J. Easterly was the first postmaster for this new office.
Population Changes Over Time
Easterly grew quite a bit. In 1914, the community's population reached its highest point. About 700 people lived there then. But after World War I, Easterly started to get smaller. By the year 2000, the population had gone down to just 61 people.
