Eastern Chalukyas facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Eastern Chalukyas, also known as the Chalukyas of Vengi, was a powerful family that ruled parts of South India for a long time. They ruled from the 7th century to the 12th century. They started as governors for another big family, the Chalukyas of Badami, in the Deccan region.

Later, the Eastern Chalukyas became very strong. They ruled the Vengi region, which is now part of Andhra Pradesh, until about 1130 CE. After that, they continued to rule but were under the control of the Chola dynasty. The first capital city of the Eastern Chalukyas was Vengi. Later, they moved their capital to Rajahmundry.

Throughout their history, the Eastern Chalukyas were often caught in wars between the even more powerful Cholas and Western Chalukyas. During the Eastern Chalukya rule in Vengi, the Telugu culture, literature, poetry, and art grew a lot in the region.

How the Dynasty Started

The Eastern Chalukyas came from the Chalukyas of Badami. A strong Badami ruler named Pulakeshin II (who ruled from 608–644 CE) took over the Vengi region in eastern Deccan. He did this by defeating the Vishnukundina dynasty.

In 624 CE, Pulakeshin II made his brother, Kubja Vishnuvardhana, the governor of this new land. After Pulakeshin II died in the Battle of Vatapi, Kubja Vishnuvardhana started the Eastern Chalukya dynasty.

Important Events in Their History

Between 641 CE and 705 CE, many kings ruled for only a short time. Only Jayasimha I and Mangi Yuvaraja ruled for longer periods. After this, there were some weak rulers.

During this time, another powerful group called the Rashtrakutas defeated the Western Chalukyas of Badami. The weak Eastern Chalukya rulers in Vengi then had to face the Rashtrakutas. There was no strong Eastern Chalukya ruler to fight against them.

Later, during the time of Gunaga Vijayaditya III, the Rashtrakuta emperor Amoghavarsha treated him as a friend and supporter. But after Amoghavarsha died, Vijayaditya made his state independent again.
