Eastland Mall is a large shopping mall located in Evansville, Indiana. It's a popular spot for shopping in the area. The mall is managed by a company called Macerich. They own and develop many malls across the United States.

Eastland Mall has over 130 different stores. These include smaller "specialty" shops and three big "department stores." You can also find a food court with many fast-food places. There's even a TGI Friday's restaurant. The main department stores at the mall are Dillard's, Macy's, and JCPenney. The mall is very big, covering about one million square feet!

Mall History: How It Started

Eastland Mall first opened its doors in August 1981. It was built by a company called General Growth Properties. When it first opened, the main department stores were JCPenney, Ben Snyder's, and deJong's. A year later, in August 1982, another big store called Lazarus was added.

Changes Over the Years

Over time, some of the original stores changed.

  • In 1987, Ben Snyder's became a store called Hess's.
  • Hess's later closed in 1993.
  • In 1996, a new store called Famous-Barr opened in its place. They even tore down the old building and built a new one!

After a while, two companies, Simon Property Group and Macerich, bought the mall together. They made some cool changes, like making the food court bigger. They also added a fun carousel for visitors.

New Stores and Updates

More changes happened in the early 2000s:

  • In 2005, the old deJong's store space was turned into several smaller shops.
  • Lazarus became Macy's in 2005.
  • The Famous-Barr store closed in 2006. Its space was then sold to Dillard's, which opened in 2007.

In 2012, Simon and Macerich decided to split up their malls. Eastland Mall became fully owned and managed by Macerich.

Recent Store Closures

Like many malls, Eastland Mall has seen some stores close recently.

  • In January 2017, The Limited announced they would close all their stores, including the one at Eastland Mall.
  • In July 2017, Gymboree also announced they would close many of their stores, including their location at Eastland Mall.
