Echo Lake is a beautiful mountain lake. You can find it in the Catskill Mountains of New York, United States. It sits in a valley between two mountains, Plattekill and Overlook. The lake is close to the town of Woodstock, New York.

Long ago, this lake had different names. Around the late 1700s, state laws called it Shens Lake. Later, in an atlas from 1875, it was called Shoes Lake.

Exploring Echo Lake: What's There?

Echo Lake is home to many different animals. You might see various kinds of fish that people like to catch. There are also many types of birds and amphibians, like frogs and salamanders.

If you enjoy camping, you're in luck! There is a special lean-to shelter and seven places where you can set up a tent. These campsites are close to the lake.

How to Reach Echo Lake: Hiking Trails

Getting to Echo Lake is an adventure itself. The main way to reach it is by hiking.

  • One trail is about 8 miles long. It starts near Platte Clove Preserve. You follow the Old Overlook Road, then go around Plattekill Mountain. Finally, a shorter path called Echo Lake Trail leads you right to the lake.
  • Another way to get there starts from Mead's Mountain in Woodstock. This route is very remote. If you camp here, it's called "backcountry camping." This means you need to carry everything you need on your back. There are no hookups or facilities like bathrooms or water taps.

Echo Lake is important because it is the starting point for the Sawkill River. This river is a major waterway that flows through the town of Woodstock.

Echo Lake in Pop Culture

The lake is so special that it even inspired a band! A folk-pop band named Woods released an album in 2009. They called their album At Echo Lake in honor of this beautiful place.
